From The Mayor's Corner....

A couple of East Pete residents who are making a difference through their volunteer efforts come to my mind for special recognition.  Ken Heeter and his wife Donna moved to East Petersburg in the last few years and he threw his lot in with the East Pete Day steering committee very soon after.  If you have a business or organization in town you probably know Ken (or at least his voice) as he is our key fundraising coordinator for the events you see happening at the park each week from May until September.  Ken takes the past info of sponsorships and follows through faithfully with them, tracking how the committee is doing securing the funds and services needed to put upcoming events on.  Ken is organized, tactful, optimistic and generally a blast to be around.  Thanks for your hard work Ken - it shows in the quality of our events.

Another is Diane Garber.  Diane and her husband Richard have been involved with the East Petersburg Fire Department for many years – he is currently a lieutenant there and Diane has been with EMS there for five years.  This past winter, she stepped up to take the role of borough EMA (emergency management) coordinator.  While things had been quiet with EMA, we were glad to have someone with her background taking a lead role.  Who would have thought that within the first year we would need her as we did responding to two major storms and widespread flooding to contend with in town?  Diane worked with the County and State EMA officials to stay organized and help with the fire company response to resident’s calls for assistance.  It was a long couple of weeks, and on behalf of the borough I thank you, Diane, for a job well done.

Be sure to stop and thank these wonderful volunteers, as well as the many others all around you…

In closing, I would encourage each of you to look inside and ask yourself if you are willing help us in 2012 – there is a considerable need.  If you are willing, we will find a spot for you that fit your abilities and desire.

If you're on Facebook, watch our page for the latest updates and links.  We are looking forward to seeing you out this year!

All the best,

Jeff Geoghan, Mayor
